ThinkPad 390E Online User's Guide
This section describes the installation procedures for DOS Version
7.0 and its device drivers.
- Have the DOS installation package in hand.
- Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
- Create the installation diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette
Factory program preloaded on the hard disk, or go to the ThinkPad Web site and
download the latest hardware driver diskettes. You need to create at
least the following device driver diskettes:

- Install DOS and the device driver diskettes.
To install DOS, follow the instructions in the DOS installation
manuals.
| Note: | If you are going to install Windows 3.11, do not install the ThinkPad
Modem Driver for DOS. Instead, install the ThinkPad Modem Driver for
Windows 3.11.

To install the ThinkPad modem driver for DOS:
- Start DOS.
- Type E CONFIG.SYS and press Enter to modify
the CONFIG.SYS file.
- Add the following lines (if not present):
Device=[Path\]HIMEM.SYS /V
Device=[Path\]EMM386.EXE RAM /V
where Path refers to the directory where DOS is installed on
your hard disk drive.
| Note: | If you modified the CONFIG.SYS file, restart the computer.

- Insert the 'ThinkPad Modem Driver Diskette for DOS" into the diskette
drive.
- Type MDMDCD 0 and press Enter.
- Type LTTSR and press Enter.
- Type MDMDCD 1 and press Enter.
Notes:
- If you change the memory size, you need to reinstall the hibernation
utility.
- If you created a hibernation partition, you need to delete it before
recreating a partition.
To install the hibernation utility for DOS:
- Insert the Hibernation Utility Diskette into the diskette drive.
- Restart the computer.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
To install the CD-ROM device driver for DOS:
- Start DOS.
- Insert the "CD-ROM Driver Diskette for DOS" into the diskette
drive.
- Type A:\UINSTALL and press Enter.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
| Note: | For software parameters in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, refer to the README
in the CD-ROM Driver Diskette.

Notes:
- If you are going to use a port replicator with your computer, you need to
uninstall CardSoft for DOS first, and then reinstall it.
- If you are going to use CardWizard for Windows 3.11, do not install
CardSoft for DOS.
To install the PC Card support software for DOS:
- Start DOS.
- Insert the "CardSoft Software for DOS" into the diskette drive.
- Type A:\INSTALL and press Enter.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
