Installing Software for Windows 98

This section describes the installation procedures for Windows 98 and its software for your ThinkPad computer.

Overall Procedure

Have the Windows 98 installation package in hand.
Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.

Create the installation diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory program preloaded on the hard disk. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:

Bay driver	Warm Swap Driver Diskette for Windows 95/98

Install Windows 98 and the software.

Installing Microsoft Windows 98

Some new devices for the ThinkPad 390E computer are not supported by the Windows 98 Retail Release Version. In addition, some new files must be incorporated at the time of installation.

If you don't have a CD-ROM of Windows 98, you can install it by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference.

If you have a CD-ROM version of the Windows 98, do the following:

Make sure there is enough space in the hard disk to store the cabinet files and the installation programs (the required space might vary depending on the language supported by your version of Windows 98).
Make a temporary directory.
For example, enter at the DOS prompt:
```
MD C:\WIN98
```
Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and the installation programs from the \WIN98 directory of the Windows 98 CD-ROM disk to the temporary directory.
For example, enter at the DOS prompt:
```
COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir
```
where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (D, E,..), tgt_drv is the drive letter, and tgt_dir is the temporary directory that you made in step 3.
Install the operating system in the temporary directory by entering setup at the temporary directory prompt.
Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.

Installing the ThinkPad Configuration Program for Windows 98

To install the ThinkPad Configuration program for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Insert the "Utility Diskette for Windows 95/98 Disk 1" into the diskette drive.
Click on Start.
Click on Run....
Type A:\SETUP and click on OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
After installation has finished, restart the system.

Installing the ThinkPad Display Driver for Windows 98

To install the ThinkPad display driver for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Double-click on My Computer and Control Panel.
Double-click on Display; then click on the Settings tab.
Click on the Advanced... button.
Click on the Adapter tab.
Click on the Change... button..
Windows 98 runs the "Update Device Driver Wizard" to guide you through the installation process.
Click on the Next> button.
Click on the radio button of "Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now"; then click on Next>.
Insert the "ThinkPad Video Features Diskette for Windows 98/Windows 95" into the diskette drive.
Put a check mark on "Floppy disk drives"; then click on Next>.
The Update Device Driver Wizard detects the NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV display driver in diskette drive A.
Click on Next>. to begin the installation.
Click on Finish.
Windows 98 prompts you to restart Windows 98 to make the display driver change effective.
Restart the computer.

To adjust your screen properties:

Start Windows 98.
Double-click on My Computer and Control Panel.
Double-click on Display; then click on the Settings tab.
Select your screen parameters from the color palette, desktop area, and font size; then click on Close.
If you have not specified the type of monitor you want to use, your new settings might not function correctly. When you are prompted to specify a monitor, select "Yes" if you want to use an external monitor or "No" if you do not want to use an external monitor.
Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the Audio Device Driver for Windows 98

To install the audio support software for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Insert the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive.
Windows automatically detects the PCI Multimedia Audio Device by displaying the New Hardware Found message box. The "Insert Disk" dialog box appears.
Insert the "Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95/Windows 98 Disk 1" into the diskette drive; then click on OK.
In the New Hardware Found message box, type A: and click on OK.
The driver installs the ESS Solo-1 PCI AudioDrive device, then the ESS Solo-1 DOS Emulation device.
The Update Device Driver Wizard appears, and detects the Gameport Joystick device; click on Next>.
Click on Finish.

The MIDI serial port connector is available if the computer is attached to the port replicator (option). The MIDI port capability is disabled as a default, so you need to enable the function with ThinkPad Configuration. After you enable MIDI port capability, you are prompted to insert the manufacturer's diskette to install support software for the function. Insert the "Audio Support Diskette for Windows 95/Windows 98" into the diskette drive.

Installing the ThinkPad Modem Driver for Windows 98

To install the ThinkPad modem driver for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Insert the "ThinkPad Modem Driver for Windows 98/Windows 95 Disk 1" into the diskette drive.
Copy MODEM530.EXE from Diskette drive to the hard disk (C drive) and click on Start and then Run....
Type C:\MODEM530 and press Enter.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Notes:

You need to set the dialing properties when using the ThinkPad Modem functions. Click on Control Panel, Modems, and then the Dialing Properties button.
Erase C:\MODEM530.EXE after the modem driver installation is completed.

Installing the TrackPoint Driver for Windows 98

To install the TrackPoint driver for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Insert the "TrackPoint Driver Diskette for Win95/98/NT" into the diskette drive.
Click on Start.
Move the cursor to Settings; then click on Control Panel.
Double-click on the System icon.
Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the "System Properties" window.
Double-click on Mouse.
Double-click on either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
Click on the Driver tab.
Click on the Update Driver... button. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" runs.
Click on Next.
Click on Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location.
Click on Next.
Click on Have Disk.
Make sure that the source drive is A:\ and click on OK.
Click on PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
Click on Next.
Click on Next.
Click on Finish in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
Remove the "TrackPoint Driver Diskette for Win95/98/NT" from the diskette drive, and restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing the Bay Driver for Windows 98

To install the bay driver for Windows 98:

Start Windows 98.
Click on Start, then Run....
Insert the "Warm Swap Driver Diskette for Windows 95/98" into the diskette drive.
Type A:\SETUP and press Enter.
Click on Next>.
Click on Yes.
Enter your Name, Company and Serial Number, and click on Next>.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.

Installing the CD-ROM Device Driver for Windows 98

This section describes how to disable the unnecessary DOS and Windows CD-ROM device drivers.

If you installed Windows 98 on a blank hard disk drive without DOS and Windows, Windows 98 has automatically installed a generic ATAPI CD-ROM device driver for your ThinkPad's CD-ROM drive. You do not need to do the following procedure.
If you installed Windows 98 in a computer on which DOS and Windows had been already installed, you need to disable the DOS and Windows CD-ROM device drivers to use the correct Windows 98 generic ATAPI CD-ROM device driver.

To disable the DOS/Windows CD-ROM device drivers:

Start Windows 98 and go to the MS-DOS command prompt.
Open the CONFIG.SYS file with your text editor; then find the following line:
```
DEVICE=C:\xxxxxx\CDROMDRV.SYS /R
```
Note: xxxxxx is the subdirectory where you have installed the CD-ROM device driver. The default subdirectory for C:\xxxxxx is C:\CDROM.
If you cannot find the line, quit the file and go to step 4.
Comment out the line to change it as follows:
```
REM DEVICE=C:\xxxxxx\CDROMDRV.SYS /R
```
If the line is already commented out, quit the file and go to the next step.
Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file; then find the following line:
```
C:\xxxxxx\MSCDEX.EXE /D:TPCD001 /M:15 
```
Note: xxxxxx is the subdirectory where you have installed the CD-ROM device driver. The default subdirectory for C:\xxxxxx is C:\CDROM.
If you cannot find the line, quit the file and go to step 6.
Comment out the line to change it as follows:
```
REM C:\xxxxxx\MSCDEX.EXE /D:TPCD001 /M:15
```
If the line is already commented out, quit the file and go to the next step.
Exit the DOS command prompt; then reboot the system.
